Keep The Labor is a free reference for comparing what a repair shop typically charges against what the same job costs in parts if you do it yourself. No account, no email, no app — pick a vehicle and a repair, and see the numbers.
How the numbers are built
Every shop-vs-DIY estimate on this site comes from hand-verified content, not a live pricing feed or an AI guess. For each vehicle and repair we record:
- A shop labor-time estimate and the current shop labor rate
- Typical shop parts and fee pricing
- Real OEM and cross-reference part numbers, checked against the specific engine and generation
- A verification date — any record older than 18 months is automatically rejected until it's re-checked
"You keep" is simply shop total − DIY parts cost, recalculated on every page load from the current labor rate. We never show you a made-up blended number — change the labor rate in one place, and every page updates.
What we don't do
- We don't publish step-by-step repair instructions for safety-critical jobs (brakes, steering, suspension, fuel, airbags) — only cost, parts, and tools
- We don't show Amazon prices on this site — tap through for current pricing
- We don't invent part numbers or ASINs — if we haven't verified one yet, the page says so instead of guessing
Who's behind it
